Chicago, IL (PRWEB) March 15, 2013
The country?s largest Marine-only website ? Leatherneck.com ? announces a new section called Lady Leatherneck which is devoted exclusively to active duty Marine Corps women and female spouses of Marines. The founder of Lady Leatherneck is a former Marine, a combat veteran of two tours to Iraq, a Marine wife, mother, entrepreneur, business woman, student and philanthropist. She is Jenna Lee Lombardo, 27, of San Clemente, CA.
?It is my purpose through Lady Leatherneck to bring a community of women together through shared experiences and to mentor and inspire others to achieve their goals,? Lombardo said. ?Followers will be able to gain access to helpful government, employment and education sites, non-profit organizations and hotlines.?
Meet Lady Leatherneck
Lombardo, a resident New Yorker at the time, was in high school when 9/11 happened. Like all citizens of the world, she was deeply and profoundly moved by the tragedy. She felt a strong need, as many did, to ?do something.? She made a vow to join the Marines, but her parents preferred she go to college before joining the military. She lasted two years.
?Then I caved,? she said. ?The pull to join the Marines was so strong that I just couldn?t continue college. Soon after, I was at Parris Island in basic training, and I really enjoyed the physical, emotional and mental challenges of that experience.?
With that positive an attitude, Lombardo became the honor graduate of her platoon and was promoted meritoriously to Private, 1st Class.
What followed was more training in basic infantry skills, motor transport, convoy and security operations. She was deployed to Iraq, home for more training, and then deployed a second time to Iraq where she worked in analytical intelligence. Promoted Combat Meritoriously to Sergeant, she was sent to Fallujah, Baghdad and Western Iraq to participate in ground combat missions.
Lombardo left the military in October, 2012. Admitting that the transition out of the military is a challenge, she dreamed of a way to engage women in the military and military wives.
She met Leatherneck Chief Operating Officer Gary Weisbaum and Chief Executive Officer Sergeant Major Gene Overstreet, the 12th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, of leatherneck.com, who both supported her ambitions and provided a forum through Leatherneck.com.
?Jenna Lee ? a.k.a. Sergeant Lombardo - is coming on board with a toolbox full of knowledge when it comes to women in the military and the needs of spouses,? Sergeant Major Overstreet said. ?She will provide family support for their military members with topics ranging from deployments to day-to-day life in the military.?
The site offers an open forum of diverse military topics to bring a community of women together and share common experiences.
?We aspire to give women a voice and help them achieve their goals,? Lombardo said. ?It is my vision to create a presence on every Marine Corps installation in order to remain constant with the rapid changes of the military. I am committed to building relationships with followers and making them feel valuable.?
Lombardo said the site will reflect:
She says she is privileged to help others understand and appreciate the endeavors of Marine Corps men and women. She hopes to foster cohesion among ?Lady? Marines and to guide the women left behind by their spouses while Marines are protecting Americans? freedoms.
?Jenna Lee has and is living every aspect of Marine Corps life, from being an active duty Marine; spouse; mother; garden to two younger sisters, one in high school and the other in college; and doing all that while negotiating deployments for her and her active duty husband,? Sergeant Major Overstreet said. ?She has an outstanding understanding of the issues that active duty and those married to active duty face every day.?
The story of Leatherneck.com
Twelve years ago, Leatherneck.com was formed to meet a unique and important need.
Jerry Shaffer, a Lance Corporal, was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1991 to pursue a career in teaching. In addition, he had a passion for technology and a deep love of the United States Marine Corps. He observed that something was missing for Marines who either retired or left the Marine Corps to begin careers. There was no platform for Marines to communicate with other Marines.
Shaffer went to work, and on Nov. 10, 2001, Leatherneck.com was born.
As retired, active, reserve and even poolee?s and their families found Leatherneck.com, it became (and remains) the country?s largest website for Marines, their families and friends.
As the site grew, so did the number of Marines who saw it including Sergeant Major Overstreet, who today leads the management team to insure Leatherneck.com continues to grow.
Today?s site offers Marine Corps news, USMC links, information, world news, VA news, FAQ, calendar, chat rooms, gallery, store, forums and advertising opportunities.
Leatherneck.com serves as the ?gateway to America?s active duty Marines and Marine Corps veterans.? The site has more than 500,000 visitors each month. In addition, 100 percent of the content on Leatherneck.com is generated by the Marines, families and friends who visit the site. Leatherneck.com has 102,000 registered members, 109,000 threads, 866,000 posts and 250,000 unique visitors every month. There are 7.2 million page views per year.
